Abstract
Oxalohydroxamic acid, for use as a coolant in a gas-generating composition (see Division C1), is precipitated when diethyl oxalate is added to a solution of hydroxylamine prepared by adding a solution of sodium in ethanol to a solution of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in methanol and filtering off sodium chloride.ALSO:A gas-generating composition comprises a perchlorate oxidizer, a combustible resinous polymer fuel binder, and from 10 to 60% by weight of a coolant comprising a hydroxamic acid, an ammonium salt or substituted ammonium salt of such an acid, a hydroxamic compound having an oxime or amide group, or hydroxyl ammonium oxalate. Specified hydroxamic acid derivatives are oxomalonohydroxamic acid, oxalohydroxamic acid amide, diammonium oxalohydroxamate, azodiformo-hydroxamic acid, oxalohydroxamic acid, triformohydroxamyl amine, monoammonium oxalohydroxamate, oxalomonohydroxamic acid, and oximidomalonohydroxamic acid. The preferred oxidizer is ammonium perchlorate, but sodium, potassium, and lithium perchlorates are also referred to. The binder may be a polyester (especially carboxy-terminated), polyester-polyurethane (especially thiol terminated), polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyacrylate, polyepoxide, polyamide, polysulphide, polyalkylene, or polyacrylamide; the polymer may be nitrated. Other optional ingredients are alkyl phthalates as plasticizers, carbon black as a darkening agent, potassium sulphate as a ballistic agent, and dinitrotoluene as a hygroscopicity inhibitor; combustion catalysts specified are metal oxides, chromates, dichromates, iron and cobalt dicyclopentadienyl, ferric and cobalt acetyl acetonate, copper phthalocyanine, and nitro cellulose. The ingredients are mixed, a curing agent for the resin being finally added, and the mixture cast or extruded into a gas-generating engine where it is cured. The compositions may be used for operating mechanical devices, for example in starters for turbine and jet engines.
