In apparatus comprising yarn-feeding means moving in a path away from the fed yarn, a heated surface is so positioned as to engage and sever a strand caught on said means and thereby separated from the fed yarn. In a tufting machine, Fig. 2, having yarn-feeding means comprising plate elements 15 carried by an endless chain 11 and formed with matches 16 of varying depths,and intermeshingplate elements 17 carried by an endless chain 12 and formed with notches 18 of uniform depth, an electrically-heated wire 20 is positioned at the outlet of the feed means transversely to the movement of the yarn 7, whereby strands 19, stripped from the latter by the action of the notches 16, are severed thereat. In a modification comprising intermeshing plate elements carried by respective rotary discs, a heated wire is provided in association with each disc. In Fig. 7 a yarn 33 is fed by parallel rolls 34, 35, and heated wires 36, 38 are positioned at the respective outlets of the rolls to sever strands 37, 39 which may be stripped from the yarn by the roughened surface of the rolls.
