Abstract

1,013,792. Selective signalling. DAVY & UNITED INSTRUMENTS Ltd. June 19, 1962 [May 19, 1961], No. 18338/61. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for measuring the dimension of a moving object along its path of travel comprises a plurality of detecting devices each arranged to detect the end of an object as it passes a number of spaced-apart points in which coarse measuring means operate according to the position of one end of the object in relation to a set of first points when the other end of the object passes a datum point and fine measuring means operate to obtain a substantially continuous measure of the distance moved by the object between said other end passing the datum point and said one end next passing one of the set of first points. When the leading end of object S, Fig. 1, reaches datum device DD1 a coarse measurement is indicated by the furthest detector Dm from detector D1 which indicates presence of work. Two counters C1, C2 then start to count clock-pulses G. Counter C1 stopping when the trailing edge of object S passes the device Dm and counter C2 stopping when the leading edge of object passes a detecting device DD2. From the ratio of the counts C1, C2 and the spacing of devices DD1, DD2, the length x by which the length of the object S exceeds the distance between devices DD1 and Dm can be calculated. Dividing, multiplying and adding units DU, MU, AU are provided to produce a signal corresponding to the length of the object S. In a modification the device DD2 can be operated by the trailing end of the object and only one counter used. A further embodiment, has the device DD1 mounted for rotatable movement or rectilinearly. A still further embodiment, Fig. 7, uses a scanning disc associated with a strip beam light source SS below the path of the object S, a photo-electric cell PC above the disc and a split-apertured mask M between the cell PC and the disc. The disc has a plurality of apertures arranged in a spiral whereby on rotation of the disc successive apertures scan equally spaced points of the object path within the predetermined range in succession.
