Abstract
1,013,664. Laminates. LEICESTER, LOVELL & CO. Ltd. April 6, 1964 [April 16, 1963], No. 14840/63. Heading B5N. A wood chipboard has bonded to one surface thereof a surfacing layer comprising a first layer of resin impregnated fibrous tissue, a metallic foil, and a second layer of resin; impregnated fibrous tissue. The fibrous tissue which may be the same or different for each layer, may be a cellulosic, glass, or asbestos paper, felt, or knitted or woven fabric and is preferably a cotton felt, and may comprise one or more sheets. The resin used with the second external, layer should have good weathering and ageing properties and is preferably a thermosetting resin such as a phenolic, epoxide or polyester resin. As well as these resins, ureaformaldehyde resins and resorcinol resins may be used for impregnating the first inner layer. Either or both of the fibrous layers may be impregnated with two or more resins as described in Specification 944,980. The resin may be applied by feeding the fibrous tissue through an aqueous or alcoholic solution of the resin or by employing a solid resin incorporated in the felt during its manufacture. The metal foil may be of aluminium, lead or copper, is preferably at least 0À0015 inch thick and is preferably treated by abrading, etching, degreasing or coating with a primer such as natural or synthetic rubber before incorporation in the laminate. The resin impregnated fibrous tissue layers and foil layer may be superimposed on the chipboard mat prior to the pressing operation; and the complete assembly formed and cured in the pressing operation, or the chipboard may be manufactured first and then the surfacing layer applied. The resin impregnated tissue may contain dye, pigments or fillers, and the second (external) layer may be embossed during the forming operation.
