Abstract
The selective hydrogenation of (a) unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons mixed with branched chain or cyclic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons or (b) more highly unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons mixed with less highly unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons is effected by contacting the mixture with a molecular sieve which has a hydrogenating Group VIII metal catalyst incorporated therein by ion-exchange followed by reduction and simultaneously or subsequently contacting the sieve with hydrogen whereby the adsorbed unsaturated hydrocarbons are desorbed and, at least in part, hydrogenated. The contacting of hydrocarbons with the molecular sieve, which may be 3-15 <\>rA, may be effected in liquid or vapour phase, e.g. at 0-500 DEG C. and 0-1000 p.s.i.g. with a gaseous flow rate of 10-3000 gaseous volumes of feed per hour per volume of catalyst. If hydrogenation is effected subsequently the sieve may be purged of unadsorbed hydrocarbons and if desired the adsorbed hydrocarbons may be partially desorbed without change and only the residue which cannot be desorbed without cracking or polymerization then hydrogenated and the hydrogenated product desorbed. Examples describe (1) the adsorption of n-hexene from a feed containing mostly iso-hexenes on a 5<\>rA sieve containing nickel and subsequently hydrogenating the adsorbed n-hexene and recovering n-hexane; (2)-(4) contacting propylene containing propadiene and methylacetylene with hydrogen and 5<\>rA sieves containing nickel or cobalt to obtain propylene free from more unsaturated compounds.ALSO:In the separation of (a) unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons from branched chain or cyclic saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons or (b) more highly unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons from less highly unsaturated straight chain hydrocarbons by adsorption on a molecular sieve, there is used a molecular sieve having incorporated therein by ion exchange followed by reduction a Group VIII metal hydrogenation catalyst and at least part of the adsorbed unsaturated material is desorbed and simultaneously hydrogenated by contact of the sieve with hydrogen. Part of the adsorbed material may be recovered first without change by mild desorption and more strongly adsorbed materials are removed by the hydrogen treatment thereby regenerating the sieve. A 34-15 sieve may be used, adsorption and hydrogen treatment being effected at 0-500 DEG C. and 0-1000 p.s.i.g. with a GHSV of 10-3000 vol./vol./hr.
