Abstract

1,013,304. Ultrasonic signalling systems. ADMIRAL CORPORATION. Sept. 4, 1962 [Sept. 11, 1961], No. 33916/62. Heading G4F. [Also in Divisions H3 and H4] A control system which responds to remotely transmitted ultrasonic control signals of a particular frequency and predetermined minimum amplitude comprises a receiving arrangement for converting the control signals into corresponding electrical signals which are amplified in an arrangement including an electron valve. The valve is arranged so that it is in a circuit whose output is decreased for all signals having amplitudes greater than a predetermined level so that the system responds only to signals lying within a restricted amplitude range. Such a system used, for example, in controlling television receivers may receive the ultrasonic control signal (transmitted for example by means of a hammer and rod type transmitter) with a piezo-electric type microphone 6 tuned to the control signal frequency. The signal from the microphone is passed through the stages 10 and 20 of a transistorized amplifier and thence to the stage 30, whose output is transformer coupled to the following stage. This stage contains as part of its collector load a resistor 38, at the collector end of which is a signal by-pass capacitor 39. In the presence of high-amplitude input signals the large load currents passing through the resistor 38 reduce the operating voltage of the transistor 30 and thereby reduce its gain. The output signal from the transformer 40 of the stage 30 is passed to the stage 50, whose output operates the coil 47 of a relay. A large capacitor 48 connected between ground and the collector 52 of the transistor 50 delays the operation of the relay for a predetermined minimum time. The closing of the relay contacts 54 is used to actuate the device 55 and initiate the desired control. The discrimination produced by the circuit with regard to frequency, amplitude and duration of the received control signal makes it very effective in rejecting spurious noise signals.
