Abstract

1,012,961. Valves ; pneumatic brakes. HAMILTON CONTROLLERS Ltd. Nov. 11, 1964 [Oct. 28, 1963], No. 42415/63. Headings F2F and F2V. A pneumatically operated two-position spool valve suitable for controlling the supply of air to a disc brake is operated by a high pressure air supply and has auxiliary valve means for reducing the pressure of this supply so that it may also be used to actuate the brake. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, a spool 5 is slidable within 0-rings 10 held spaced apart by spacers 9, and has a hollow end 7 co-operating with a stationary piston 11-15, air being admitted to the interior 8 from a high pressure inlet 20 via a port 17 and passages 16, 15 to urge the spool to the left. The other end of passage 16 leads to a port 18 which is connected, via a solenoidoperated valve (not shown), to a port 19 leading to a chamber in which works the other end 6 of the spool 5. The inlet 20 is connected, with the spool positioned as shown, to a chamber 21 (via a port, not shown) having an outlet 29 leading to the brake. A closure member 23, located in chamber 21, co-operates with a seat 28 and is connected to a piston 22, 26 which is acted upon by air at a reference pressure admitted at 25 to urge the member 23 to the open position, the reference pressure being that pressure required to operate the brake. In operation, with the brake disengaged and the solenoid valve de-energized the closure member 23 is in the open position and the connection between ports 18 and 19 is closed, and since port 19 is connected to atmosphere via the solenoid valve the spool is urged to the position shown by air in the chamber 8. Air consequently flows from the inlet 20 to the outlet 29 to engage the brake until the pressure in the outlet slightly exceeds the said reference pressure, at which time the piston 22, 26 is moved to seat the closure member. With the closure member seated, any make-up required at the brake, e.g. due to leakage, is provided from port 25 via a passage 27 by-passing the piston. To release the brake, the solenoid valve is energized to admit air from the inlet to act on the left-hand end 6 of the spool to move it to the right, the end 6 having a larger effective area than the interior of the end 7. With the spool in this position, the inlet 20 is cut off and the chamber 21 is connected to exhaust ports 31, so that the closure member is opened by the reference pressure acting on the piston 22, 26 and the outlet 29 is then connected to exhaust.
