Abstract

1,012,648. Inserting studs in tyres. FAGERSTA BRUKS A.B. Sept. 6, 1963 [Sept. 12, 1962], No. 35351/63. Heading F2S. A tool for providing vehicle tyres with studs to prevent skidding comprises a pointed-ended expander bit 3 with a handle 1 and which is a sliding fit within the bore of a sleeve 5 provided with a reduced, thin-walled, end portion and a handle 4. In order to insert a stud 6 into a tyre 7 the bit 3 is passed through the sleeve 5 and pressed either into a preformed hole 8 in the tyre or into the latter to form a hole 8, the boss 2 on the handle 1 acting as a stop against the sleeve 5 which has not yet been inserted into the tyre. The handle 4 is then pressed down until the whole of the thin-walled portion of the sleeve 5 enters the hole 8 around the expander 3 which is then withdrawn from the sleeve 5 which meanwhile holds back the wall of the expanded hole 8. The stud 6 is then introduced into the sleeve 5 and pushed into the bottom of the hole 8 by the expander 3 which is re-introduced into the sleeve 5 and pressed downward while the sleeve 5 is lifted out of the hole 8 so that the latter collapses about the stud 6 to hold it firmly in the tyre 7.
