Abstract
Thorium hydroxy-oxalate, having a composition from <FORM:1012511/C2/1> to <FORM:1012511/C2/2> , is obtained by treating thorium oxalate with aqueous ammonia solution and heating the resultant suspension to 65 DEG C.ALSO:Thorium oxide is prepared by treating thorium exalate with aqueous ammonia to obtain thorium hydroxy-oxalate, adding aqueous acid thereto at pH below 5 to form an aqueous suspension thereof and heating it at 80-100 DEG C. for a time sufficient to modify the crystalline shape, treating the crystals in aqueous suspension with a sufficient amount of ammonia solution to raise the pH of the suspension to 6-9, the suspension being agitated at above room temperature for a time sufficient to stabilize the pH within the above range, collecting the crystals, washing them with water, drying, and calcining them to thorium oxide. Thorium-rich mixed oxides are prepared by the addition of a solution of one or more water-soluble salts of at least one metal selected from any of Group II to VIII of Mendeleef's Periodic Table to the acidic aqueous suspension of modified thorium hydroxy-oxalate crystals. The metal content of the mixed oxides other than thorium comprises up to 10% by weight based on the thorium present. The products have a specific surface of 5 m.2g. to 20 m.2g. The preparations of thorium-rich mixed oxides containing thorium oxide together with uranium oxide; uranium oxide and calcium oxide; and cobalt oxide and calcium oxide are exemplified. Ternary mixed oxides containing thorium oxide, 0.1-1% by weight of one or more alkaline earth metal oxides, e.g. Ca, Mg, or Sr oxides, and 5% by weight uranium dioxide are also described and stated to be of use as nuclear fuels. Both thorium oxide and the thorium-rich mixed oxides may be used in ceramics and refractories.
