Abstract

Polymers of acrylic and methacrylic acids and their salts and esters are plasticized with polyesters derived from (a) an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, (b) a dicarboxylic acid, (c) a bis-(hydroxyaryl) pentanoic acid of formula <FORM:1012489/C3/1> where R is chloro, bromo or lower alkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2, the hydroxyl group in each ring being attached to the 4-position of the ring when n for that ring is 0 and, possibly (d) a saturated or unsaturated monocarboxylic acid containing 9 to 22 carbon atoms. Preferably the polyester is present in an amount of 10 to 90% based on the weight of the acrylate polymer. Specified polyester forming components are: for (a)-ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1 : 4-butanediol, 2 : 5-pentanediol, neopentyl glycol, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, glycerol, erythritol, pentaerythritol, polypentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, alpha-methyl glucoside, polyallyl alcohol, trimethylol ethane and trimethylol propane; for (b)-adipic, malonic, succinic, glutaric, pimelic, maleic, fumaric, endomethylenetetrahydrophthalic, chlorendic and phthalic acids. Examples (1)-(6) describe the manufacture of polyesters by reacting (a) trimethylolethane or pentaerythritol, (b) phthalic anhydride, (c) 4,4 - bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) pentanoic acid and, possibly (d) coconut fatty acids, dehydrated castor oil acids or isodecanoic acid. Examples (7)-(12) disclose coating compositions comprising a mixture of polymethyl methacrylate and one of these polyesters dissolved in methyl ethyl ketone or a mixture of toluol and butanol.
