Abstract
Textile materials composed at least in part of synthetic hydrophobic polymeric material, e.g. nylon, polyesters, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers and cellulose esters such as cellulose triacetate are rendered antistatic and their water absorbency and handle are improved by applying thereto from an aqueous medium 0.01-2% by weight of a polyacrylic acid or poly methacrylic acid or salt thereof and 2-20 times the weight of the acid or salt of a water soluble high molecular weight compound selected from polyvinyl alcohol which may be partially esterified proteinaceous materials, e.g. gelatin, alginic acid and its water-soluble salts starch, starch dextrins, starch ethers, e.g. hydroxy ethyl starch, cellulose ethers, e.g. hydroxyethyl cellolose, tannic acid, deacetylated chitin, condensates of alkylene oxides with polyamines, partially hydrolysed, polyacrylonitrile and polyalkyleneoxy derivatives of polymers containing a plurality of acide amide groups, and then heating at a temperature above 60 DEG C for at least fifteen seconds. The polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid or salts thereof and the high molecular weight compounds may be applied to the textile materials from the same, or different, aqueous solutions. The alkali metal and ammonium salts of polyacrylic acid or polymethacrylic acid may be used. The treating compositions may also contain an acid catalyst, e.g. ammonium chloride, nitrate, thiocyanate or dihydrogen phosphate, magnesium chloride, zinc nitrate and amine salts, which may be present in an amount of from 5% to 50% based on the weight of the polyacrylic acid, polymethacrylic acid or salt thereof. The process may be carried out before, in conjunction with or after other chemical or mechanical finishing operations used to confer shrink resistance or crease resistance, modified hand or surface lustre, water repellency or optical brightness to textile materials.
