Abstract
A metal carbide, particularly a uranium carbide, ingot is submitted to localized fusion under vacuum to form drops which are received on a cooled plate to form granules. The ingot preferably sintered, may be disposed vertically above and close to the plate, and may be provided with means for lowering it at a rate related to the fusion of its lower end. Fusion is preferably carried out by electron bombardment using at least one electron beam (see Division H1). The plate, e.g. of copper and cooled by water, is rotatable or sloping, or arranged as a moving belt, whereby the granules are removed as formed, and either collected, or discharged directly into a crucible located within the same furnace to be formed into rods and bars.
