Abstract

1,011,301. Capsules. H. DUNMIRE. Sept. 18, 1962 [Sept. 18, 1961 (2)], No. 35529/62. Heading B8C. [Also in Division A5] A capsule comprises a collapsible cup-shaped body 10 having an upper end wall, a circumferential side wall, a closure 14 and a hypodermic needle 15 mounted in the upper end wall so that it is enclosed in the body and punctures the closure when the body is collapsed, the body having a primary hinge portion 23 at which circumferential bending is initiated upon movement of the upper end wall towards the closure to collapse the body and invert the upper portion of the body within the lower portion. The closure disc 14 is heatsealed to the cup 10 and the point of the needle is located in a passage 102 in a gland 20 in the centre of the closure. The side portions of the cup comprise a lower rigid side wall 22 joined to an upper more flexible side wall 21 by a thinner peripheral portion 23 which defines the primary hinge. A peripheral notch 24 between the end wall of the cup and the upper side wall provides a secondary hinge about which the upper side wall folds as the body is collapsed. The secondary hinge prevents the cup returning to its uncollapsed condition. During assembly, a metal element e.g. a ring 138, powder or printed metal, is disposed between the cup and the closure which have abutting flanges held together between non-conductive dies 134, 139 (Fig. 12). The metal element is heated inductively so that adjacent portions of the cup and closure become heated to seal them together. Alternatively, a dielectric element placed between the flanges is heated dielectrically to seal the cup to the closure.
