Abstract

1,011,202. Vehicle suspensions. REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. June 6, 1962 [June 16, 1961], No. 21719/62. Heading B7D. [Also in Division F2] A torsion bar suspension for the wheels of a road vehicle comprises torsion bars 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, which may be encased in protective sheaths 38, having their one ends secured against rotation by mountings 13 carried by chassis members 4 and 3, respectively, their other ends extending through and connected to hub members 6 to which are secured wheel carrier arms 5. The hubs 6 are connected at their outer ends to sleeves 9 which have splined portions engaging hexagonal end portions of the torsion bars and. which are supported in metal sleeves 27, Fig. 5, forming the inner members of bearings each comprising a resilient bush 26 and an outer metal sleeve 28 carried in a tubular member 25 supported by brackets 22 carried by a longitudinal member 23 of the vehicle chassis. The hub members 6 also include bearings 7 each comprising metal sleeves 18 and 19 and a resilient bush 17, the sleeve 18 being supported by a ring 20 carried by a bracket 15 attached to the chassis member 3 or 4. The torsion bars are offset by a distance D and the wheels by an equal distance E. The anchored end of each torsion bar is of hexagonal section engaged in a splined socket member 13, which is supported in an open socket portion 31 of the bracket 15, Fig. 3, the socket member 13 being secured to an arm 30 having a radial portion 34 provided with holes 32 through one of which a bolt 33 is inserted to engage a corresponding hole in the longitudinal member 3 or 4, reinforced by a U-shaped member 35, the plurality of holes 32 providing means whereby the height of the chassis may be adjusted. The splines of the sockets 30 also provide a means for obtaining height adjustment. A vibration damper 43 .is fitted between an arm 44 upstanding from arm 5 and a bracket 42 on the chassis.
