Abstract

1,009,591. Magnetic tape recording &c. heads. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 1, 1963], No. 8219/64. Heading G5R. Reduced wear and friction between heads and video-frequency tapes is achieved by making the running surface of the head 5 doublycurved away from the tape tangent plane. The radii R, R 1 , Figs. 1, 2 may be the same and share a common centre, whereupon the surface is ground spherical in a fixture (not detailed). Alternatively, the transverse radius R3, Fig. 6, may be smaller than R. To reduce the tape-contacting width, and hence reducing adjacent-track cross-talk, the head may be bevelled, flat as at 12, Fig. 5, or cylindrically or spherically, the bevel curvature also being convex.
