Abstract

1,009,403. Centrifugal blowers; turbines. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. July 13, 1962 [July 14, 1961], No. 25614/61. Headings FIC and FIT. An impeller or turbine wheel comprises a central hub, a number of blades arranged circumferentially around the hub and spaced apart therefrom, spokes connecting the hub to the blades, shroud rings secured to opposite end faces of the blades to form a number of buckets, and reinforcing members within the blades to provide means for connecting the spokes to the blades. An impeller wheel 11, suitable for affording lift in an air-cushion vehicle, comprises a central hub 12 mounted on ball and roller bearings 13 and 14 respectively and connected through gearing (not shown) to a driving shaft (not shown). Hollow aerofoil blades 20, of which there are nineteen, of a cold setting resin loaded with glass fibres are filled with a plastics-foam material and may have a sheathing of stainless steel. Each blade 20 is reinforced at its leading edge by a metallic tube 17 connected, substantially parallel to the rotational axis 19, to the hub 12 by radial spokes 15, tangential spokes 16 and brackets 18 which plug into the ends of each tube 17. The tangential spokes 16 transmit driving torque whereas the radial spokes 15 provide transverse stability to the wheel 11. Two shroud rings 21, 22 are secured to the ends of the blades 20 to secure the latter in equi-spaced relationship. A deflector ring 23 supported by a ring member 24 connected to the hub 12 deflects incoming air through substantially 90 degrees to blades 20 whereby the air is directed radially outwards. The shroud rings 21, 22 and the deflector ring 23 are of cold-setting resin-impregnated glass fibre.
