Abstract

1,009,333. Servicing reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Feb. 6, 1962 [Feb. 17, 1961], No. 6061/61. Heading G6C. Apparatus for removing fuel elements 12 contiguously packed in the liquid sodium coolant 11 of a fast reactor through an access hole 13 in shielding 14, comprises a removable plug 16 carrying a non-circular tube 15 supporting an open-topped receptacle 17, the arrangement being such that when the plug is lifted from the hole and displaced sideways the tube and receptacle may pass through the hole. Tubes 22, 24 rotatably and slidably supported in the plug 16 on an axis displaced from the axis of the receptacle 17 by an amount equal to the distance between adjacent fuel elements 12, carry, respectively, a shroud 23 and a grab 25. The shroud is connected to the tube 22 by brackets 29 and the grab is carried by an arm 26 so that the lifting axis of the grab is displaced from the axis of the tube 24 by an amount equal to the distance between adjacent fuel elements. A slot 28 in the tube 22 and shroud 23 permits vertical movement of the grab between the ends of the shroud. A nose 36 on a bottom plate 20 locates the apparatus in the top-filling 35 of one of the fuel elements and a nose 31 of the grab enters the top-fitting of the element to be extracted when the tubes 22, 24 are lowered so that the shroud and grab are positioned above the selected fuel element as shown in Fig. 2. The grab 25 is actuated by a shaft 27 through an arm 33 and cam bar 32 such that when the shaft is pulled the claw plates 30 are spread apart to engage beneath a recess 34 in the fitting 35. The grab is now lifted so that the element 12 is wholly within the shroud 23, the shroud preventing lifting of the adjacent fuel elements, and the grab and shroud are then lifted and rotated to bring them above the liquid sodium-filled receptacle 17 whereupon the element is deposited in the receptacle and the complete apparatus may be removed through the hole 13. In a modified apparatus (Fig. 4, not shown) the arm 26 is omitted and the grab operates on the axis of the shaft 27, the shroud 23 being concentric with this axis. The receptacle 17 is pivotally mounted about an axis displaced from the axis of the shaft 27 by an amount equal to the distance between adjacent fuel elements so that the receptacle may be aligned with the shroud or displaced therefrom to permit lowering of the grab.
