Abstract
1,009,131. Automatic temperature control. HONEYWELL Inc. July 10, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 28534/64. Heading G3R. The temperature of a continuously operating digester of cellulosic material is automatically controlled by a signal dependent on deviation of digester temperature from a value derived by a computer from digester operating conditions. In Fig. 1 chips of two different cellulosic materials, e.g. woods, are respectively supplied from conveyers 2,10, through hoppers 3, 11, low-pressure pumps 5, 12, steaming vessels 4, 13 removing turpentine, and high-pressure pumps 6, 14, to the top of a digester 1. Alkaline liquid to decompose the chips and remove lignin is withdrawn from a lower portion of the digester by pumps 16, 18 and returned to the top of the digester through heat exchangers 15, 17. A controller 26 responsive to the temperature of the liquid withdrawn by pump 18 controls the supply of heat to exchanger 17 to maintain a temperature within the digester which is is determined by a computer 25. The end product passes to a tank 21 from which it is taken for paper manufacture. Computer 25 may be arranged to measure some of the process variables such as the rate of feed of chips, percentage of lignum in the treated chips, rate of supply of the end product, type of wood and temperature in the upper portion of the digester. Potentiometers in the computer are set manually to correspond with these variables and the computer, which includes transistor amplifiers, is arranged to compute a signal which is applied to controller 26 to ensure that a digester temperature appropriate to the values of the variables is maintained. Time switches within the computer effect changeover to other potentiometers set to correspond with different values of the variables which are expected to obtain at the time of changeover. The computer is provided with switches and controls for manual control, testing, and smooth changeover to automatic control, as well as lamps to indicate the results of tests and the state of the apparatus.
