The volume of solids is determined from the change produced in the resonant frequency of an acoustic (Helmholtz type) resonator.by the introduction of the solids. The invention is described in connection with determining the volume of minerals in conveyer tubs or on conveyer belts the operation consisting of passing the tubs or belts through a measuring station at which they are enclosed by the resonator the resonant frequency of which is measured by conventional means. By additionally measuring the weights of the minerals by known means the latter may be sorted in accordance with density. Digital or analogue methods may be employed for all measurements the whole operation being controlled by a sequence controller so that continuous movement may be effected. Pulsed or continuous wave acoustic energy may be employed in the measurement of the resonant frequency.
