Abstract
A method of cracking hydrocarbons utilizes the synethetic mordenite of Specification 983,756, of formula <FORM:1008596/C4-C5/1> having incorporated therewith, by base-exchange, alkaline earth metal, including magnesium, ions, or rare earth metal ions, a minor amount of residual alkali metal ions and substantially no hydrogen ions (see Division C1). Examples refer to the use of the catalysts in the cracking of straight chain paraffins, e.g. n-decane and n-hexadecane, to yield branched chain paraffins and olefins, and of alkyl aromatic compounds, e.g. cumene, which yields benzene and propylene. The rare earth metal mordenite is resistant to sulphur poisoning.ALSO:The synthetic mordenite of Specification 983,756 has incorporated therewith exchangeable alkaline earth metal, including magnesium, ions or rare earth metal ions, a minor amount of residual alkali metal ions and substantially no hydrogen ions, and has a bore size such that it is capable of absorbing benzene, i.e. about 6.6 A diameter. The product is obtained by exchanging the sodium ions of the synthetic mordenite, by reaction at e.g. 90 DEG C. with e.g. MgSO4, CaCl2, BaCl2 or a rare earth metal nitrate solution, and is used as a hydrocarbon cracking catalyst (see Division C5).
