Abstract

Halogen-containing resins, particularly polyvinyl chloride, are stabilized with compositions comprising (1) carboxylates and/or mercaptides formed from at least two different metal cations, one of said cations being derived from an organo-tin compound, and (2) a phenol or substituted phenol. The stabilizers may also contain organic phosphites, epoxy compounds and/or polyalcohols. Specified metal compounds are dibutyltin dilaurate, maleate and diisooctylthioglycollate, and the cadmium, zinc, lead, barium, strontium and calcium salts of benzoic, caprylic, caproic, naphthenic, lauric, stearic, capric, 2-methyl pentanoic, ethylhexoic and C9- 4 synthetic acids and alkyl thioglycollates. Specified phenols are octyl, p-t.-butyl, nonyl, amyl and dodecyl phenols, bisphenols and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-p-cresol. The phosphites may be trialkyl, triaryl or mixed alkyl aryl phosphites. The epoxy compounds may be glycidyl ethers or esters, esters of epoxidized unsaturated fatty acids, or epoxy aromatic compounds. Preferred polyalcohols are polymethylenic alcohols. Examples describe compositions comprising polyvinyl chloride together with (1) dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl tin dilaurate, cadmium benzoate, barium laurate and p-t.-butyl phenol; (2) dibutyl tin maleate, zinc stearate and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methylphenol; (3) dibutyl tin diisooctyl thioglycollate, zinc stearate, 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol and stearic acid; and (4) dibutyl tin dilaurate, zinc stearate and 2,6-di-t.-butyl-4-methyl phenol.
