Abstract

A coating composition comprises an aqueous dispersion of (a) discrete particles of a wax, (b) a dispersing agent and (c) discrete particles of a water-soluble linear nitrogenous polymer of monoethylenically unsaturated molecules comprising 4 to 100% of at least one amine of formula <FORM:1008465/C3/1> where R is hydrogen, chlorine or methyl and R2 is hydrogen, a saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group of up to 10 carbon atoms, the R2 groups being the same or different, A is oxygen, sulphur or a <FORM:1008465/C3/2> group and R1 is at C2-C10 alkylene group, or at least one amine of formula <FORM:1008465/C3/3> where R0 is hydrogen or C1-C12 alkyl, the R0 groups being the same or different, and n is 1 to 4, the composition having a pH of at least 7 and, when applied to a substrate and dried, forming a coating which is resistant to alkaline detergents and has a Knoop hardness number of from 0.5 to 15. Specified amines include, in a long list, t.-butylaminoethyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate, 5-amino-pentyl vinyl ether, N-(dimethylaminoethyl)-acrylamide, beta-aminoethyl vinyl sulphide, 4-vinyl pyridine, 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, and N-t.-octylaminoethyl vinyl ether. The polymer of the amine may be a homopolymer or copolymer which contains at least 4% amine monomer. Specified comonomers are styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl and vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, metharcylamide, and esters of acrylic acid and of methacrylic acid with an alcohol having 1 to 18 carbon atoms. The composition may also contain a wax-soluble resin or gum, and alkali-soluble resin, plasticizer or pigment. The compositions may be used for coating, e.g. linoleum, asphalt and vinyl floor tile surfaces.
