Abstract
The invention comprises phenoxy and bi-phenoxy siloxanes of the general formula <FORM:1008294/C3/1> where R is a monovalent organic group or hydrogen, Z is a phenoxy group, in which case a is 2, or an o,o1-biphenoxy group, in which case a is 1, X is oxygen or an -OYO- group wherein Y is -(R211SiO)n(R211Si)- where R11 is hydrocarbon and n is 0 or a positive integer and R1 is <FORM:1008294/C3/2> in which R111 is a monovalent hydrocarbon, or compounds wherein Z, R, R11 and R111 are substituted, n is preferably not greater than 200. They may be prepared by (1) controlled hydrolysis of a silane or by cohydrolysis of a mixture of silanes, (2) the reaction of a silanol with a silane or siloxane containing a siliconbonded halogen atom in the presence of an acid acceptor, (3) the reaction of a chlorosilane with a hydroxysiloxane, (4) the reaction of a halosilane or a halosiloxane with an alkali metal silanolate. R and R111 may be alkyl, haloalkyl, aryl, haloaryl, aminoaryl, alkenyl or hydrogen. The group Z may be substituted by halogen, alkoxy, polyalkyleneoxy, haloalkyl, haloaryl, nitro, amino and alkylamino groups. Typical examples describe the preparation of 1,3-dimethyl tetraphenoxy disiloxane; 1,1,3,3-bis -(o,o1 - biphenoxy) - 1,3 - dimethyldisiloxane; 1,1 - o,o1 - biphenoxy - 1 -phenyl -3,3,5,5,5-pentamethyl trisiloxane. Uses.-As a diffusion pump fluid.
