Abstract

10 - Unsubstituted - 19 - nor - steroids are prepared by treating D 4-3-oxo-10-acyloxy-19-norsteroids with metallic reducing agents to give D 5(10)-3 - oxo - 19 - nor - steroids and, if desired, treating these with an acidic or basic agent to give D 4-3-oxo-19-nor-steroids. The starting materials may be of the spirostane, pregnane, androstane, cholane, cholestane, stigmastane or cardanolide series and may contain, as further substituents in the ring system or the side chain, halogen atoms, alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl groups, esterified or etherified hydroxyl groups and free, ketalized or enolized oxo groups. They may also contain oxido groups, e.g. in the 9,11- or 16,17-positions or additional double bonds, e.g. D 6. Examples are given.
