Abstract

1,008,253. Road grooving machines. CONCRETE SAWING EQUIPMENT Inc. May 23, 1962, No. 19782/62. Heading E1G. [Also in Divisions B3 and B7] A machine for removing bumps from and providing anti-skid groove in concretepaved surfaces, e.g. aircraft runways or the like, comprises a vehicle frame 96, Fig. 1 supported at its rear end by a four-wheeled truck 9 which forms the propelling unit and is rockable about a horizontal pivot 105, a cutter shaft 5 carried by the front of the vehicle frame, and an extension frame 75 having a rear end pivotably connected with the vehicle frame and a front end having wheel 76 for engaging the paving. The forward end of the vehicle frame is supported by a pair of wheels 147 mounted on an axle 9 which is retractable by an hydraulic cylinder 12, Fig. 8. The grinding or cutting element 49 comprises a series of steel discs having abrasive-coated rims mounted on the shaft 5 which is belt-driven in an anti-clockwise direction by an engine 135, Fig. 1, which also drives a pump 145 for supplying the cylinder 12 and a torque-converting motor 107, Fig. 5, not shown, for driving the two axles of the propelling unit. Forwardly extending members of the extension frame 75 are hinge-jointed at 102 to upright member 103 extending from the frame 96 and carry a pair of steerable wheels 76 at a distance equal to four times that between the pivot 105 of the propelling unit and the wheel axle 9, Fig. 8. The forward end of the frame 96 may be raised or lowered relative to the frame 75 by screw-jacks 104. A water-spray is directed on to the grinding element 49 by a perforated pipe 55, Fig. 8, carried transversely of the frame 96. A trailing platform 92, Fig. 1, is provided for the operator.
