Abstract

Benzoic acid is made by a continuous process which comprises reacting a monoalkylbenzene with molecular oxygen in an oxidation zone in the presence of liquid benzoic acid and a heavy metal oxidation catalyst at a temperature above the oxidation potential threshold temperature of the monoalkylbenzene, removing heat of reaction by indirect heat exchange between reaction mixture and a cooling medium, withdrawing liquid reaction mixture from the oxidation zone, recycling the major portion of the withdrawn liquid reaction mixture to the oxidation zone, and removing a minor portion of the withdrawn reaction mixture for the recovery of benzoic acid therefrom. The oxidation may be effected adiabatically or isothermally. In one adiabatic method, a portion of the resulting reaction liquid, mainly benzoic acid, is withdrawn from the oxidation zone and passed through an external heat removal loop and the cooled liquid reactor effluent is returned to the oxidation zone. A slip stream of the liquid in the external loop is withdrawn, preferably before the heat removal, and processed to recover benzoic acid. Make-up monoalkyl benzene is preferably added to the cooled recycled stream. In another embodiment, an isothermal oxidation zone is in indirect heat exchange relationship with a cooling medium for heat removal, for example by using a tubular coil or bundle of tubes or elongated cylinder surrounded by the cooling medium, preferably water. The effluent is passed to a gas-liquid separator, the liquid is withdrawn from the separator, a major portion being recycled with make-up monoalkylbenzene to the oxidation zone, and a minor portion being processed to recover benzoic acid. Suitable forms of apparatus for the oxidation of monoalkylbenzene and the recovery of benzoic acid are described. The oxidation temperature is preferably 300-400 DEG C. manganese and/or cobalt compounds are preferred as the heavy metal catalysts but nickel, chomium, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, tin and cerium can be used. The catalyst preferably contains bromine in ionic, elemental or covalent combined form. Detailed examples are given. Specification 1,008,192 is referred to.
