A valve suitable for use in the coolant circuits of nuclear reactors comprises a closure member B (Fig. 2) arranged to move from a horizontal open position parallel to the axis of the body 10 to a vertical closed position whereby it seats against either of the annular seatings 12, 14 formed within the body, the motion of the flap being substantially at right angles to the seating at the time of application thereto. In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1-3, a triangular driving plate 26 is connected at its upper end to two cranks 28, 30, one of which is driven, in such a manner that its lower end, which is pivotally connected to the closure member, has imparted to it a motion the locus of which is substantially a straight line parallel to the axis of the body. The guide mechanism comprises plates 24 attached to the closure member and pivotally connected to cranks 42, a stud 48 being provided on each plate to coact with a member 46 thereby ensuring that the cranks 42 begin to move in a direction consistent with the direction of motion of cranks 28, 30 when closures commences. The shaft 36 is provided with a plate 38 driven by a jack 40, a pivoted locking plate 58 driven by jack 56 being provided to coact with plate 38 at the open or either of the closed positions. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the operating means comprises a crank 28<SP>1</SP> driven through gears by a jack (not shown) and pivotally connected to a plate 26<SP>1</SP> which is rigidly connected to the closure member B<SP>1</SP>. The guide means comprise rollers 62 mounted on a diameter at the edge of the closure member and guided in channels 66 provided in the wall of the body. For initial guidance from the open position a stud 48<SP>1</SP> is provided on the plate 26<SP>1</SP> to coact with a member 461.
