Abstract

1,007,962. Selective punching machines. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1964 [Oct. 30, 1963], No. 39743/64. Heading B4B. A machine for punching record material 11 comprises a plurality of hollow punches 14, a plurality of solid anvils 17, rollers 10 for feeding the material between the punches and anvils and means for selectively moving the anvils so that each selected anvil co-operates with a punch to punch the material. The punches, which each have a through hole 15, are carried by a continuously-rotating cylinder 13. Operation of each anvil is controlled by a selection mechanism comprising a lever 18, interposer 19, interposer lever 20, restoring lever 21, operating element 22, anvil cam 23, rotary cam 24 and holding means 25. Lever 20 is normally latched by the means 25 but is freed to pivot under the action of spring 33 when electromagnet 38 is energized. The electromagnets are selectively energized by means of brushes 46 at sensing station 47 or by means of brushes 48 at sensing station 49. When it is desired to produce a hole in the material, an upward force 53, Fig. 3, is applied to the selected anvil and this force is timed to occur after the preceding punch has passed over the anvil. As shown in Fig. 4, the force 63 lifts the anvil and material fully into position before the leading edge 54 of the selected punch has passed through the area of maximum restriction. In Fig. 5, the anvil is held in its raised position while the selected punch pusses fully over it. The shouldered portion 17a on the anvil strikes support 12 limiting the upward travel of the anvil and material so that the selected punch passes sufficiently through the material to fracture it to form a chip 55. As the trailing edge 56, Fig. 6, of the selected punch moves past the punching position, the force 53 is reversed. When the anvil is fully retracted, the chip is retained on the punch until mechanically forced into the throughhole of the punch by the pressure of later chips. The chips are removed from the cylinder 13 by a source of vacuum connected to the hollow shaft 16 of the cylinder.
