[Also in Division H1] A device for grinding a group of lens-like quartz resonators 16 with a double-convex or plano-convex surface comprises a rotatable lap 2 having a concavo-spherical grinding surface exposed upright, and a holder which maintains the blanks in contact and consists of an eccentric ring 4 loosely placed on the grinding surface, a cylinder 11 in the opening in the ring for pressing the blanks against the surface by means of an annular part 13, and a control rod 14 within the cylinder and resting on the grinding surface for preventing the blanks from emerging from under the annular part, the holder being movable in a hole 21 in a mount 17 disposed above the lap. The grinding surface 3 has a radius of curvature equal to that to be formed on the resonators 16. The ring 4 has a surface 5 having the same radius of curvature as the grinding surface and has an eccentric bore for receiving the cylinder 11, the lower portion of which has an annular part 13 of low abrasive material for pressing the blanks 16 against the grinding surface. The rod 14 extends through a bore in the cylinder 11 to retain the blanks beneath the part 13. The ring 4 is loosely received in the hole 21 in the mount 17 which is vertically and horizontally adjustable. The surface of the lap may be of soft metal, such as bronze, and is automatically lapped with the surface 15 of the ring which is of harder material such as steel. In operation, a number of blanks, e.g. eight, are placed under the part 13 and a pump is started to deliver a grinding suspension to the surface of the lap. During rotation of the lap, ring 4 rotates in the hole 21 of the mount, cylinder 11 rotates at a lower speed in the ring, and the blanks 16 rotate about their own axes because of the speed difference at opposite points of the blank. Upon grinding one surface, the blanks are provided with a piano-convex form. The blanks may then be inverted and a cylinder having an annular part formed with a concave form used to press the blanks against the lap to provide them with a double-convex form.
