Abstract

A process of producing a mixture of cycloheptane derivatives containing principally monohydroxymethyl cycloheptane comprises the catalytic hydroformylation of cycloheptatriene using a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in which the molar ratio of carbon monoxide to hydrogen is less than 1 : 1. Advantageously, the products are after hydrogenated to convert any aldehyde formed to alcohol and to decompose the cobalt carbonyl formed. Examples are furnished of processes in which monohydroxymethylheptane and residues containing dihydroxymethylcycloheptane are obtained. The process may be carried out continuously.
