Abstract

Superimposed webs 11, 12 of synthetic plastic material, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene film, are simultaneously cut and welded by a heated cutting and welding tool 16 which is passed through the webs 11, 12 into a cooled gap and to which there is imparted an oscillatory movement, rotary movement or oscillatory and rotary movement with respect to the moving sheet material to prevent adhesion of the molten synthetic plastic material to the tool 16. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the webs 11, 12 are introduced into a gap between a holding strip 15 bent upwardly at 15a and two hollow supports 13, 14 through which a cooling liquid 17 circulates. The tool 16 comprises a rotary disc acting through a slot 15b in the strip 15 and which is resistance heated through slip rings 21, 22 and friction contacts 23, 24. The disc 16 is mounted on a shaft 29 driven by a motor 47 having its flange secured to a housing 49 and is vertically reciprocated by a reciprocating plate 39 upon which the housing 49 is mounted. Springs 40, 41 normally urge the plate 39 downwardly towards fixed guide blocks 34, 35. An eccentric 45 on a driven shaft 46 periodically lifts a member 38 supporting the flanges 36, 37 on the member 38 sliding in channels formed by extensions 34a, 35a of the blocks 34, 35. In a modification (not shown), the tool 16 only rotates and does not oscillate. To form two longitudinal seams simultaneously in the webs 11, 12 a cutting and welding device is provided at each side of the webs. In a second embodiment, Fig. 4, a housing 149 to which a flange 147a, Fig. 3 (not shown), of the motor is secured has a portion 149a (not shown) enclosing gearing to convert the rotary motion of the motor to oscillatory motion so that a shaft 167 carrying the cutting and welding tool 166 oscillates. The tool 166 is shaped as shown and oscillates in its own plane. Heat is supplied to the tool 166 by passing a current through conducting members 169, 170 inside an electrically insulating thickened portion 167a of the shaft 167 via lines 175, 176, spring contacts 173, 174 and friction segments 171, 172. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, the rotary motion of the motor (not shown) is converted to a reciprocatory motion for a plunger 283, guided in an extension 282a, by gearing in a housing 282. A U-shaped cutting and welding tool 296 is mounted in the plunger 283 and is heated by a current passing therethrough through leads 225, 226, 269, 270. The tool 296 penetrates the films 211, 212 of intermittent zones between which the films are only sealed by welding.
