Abstract

Titanium dioxide pigment is made by a process of coating pigmentary rutile titanium dioxide with stannic oxide preferably 0.2 to 2% by weight of the pigment and thereafter heating the coated pigment to a temperature of at least 625 DEG C., and preferably to 700-800 DEG C. The pigment may also be coated with aluminium oxide and/or silicon dioxide. A modification of the process consists of applying the coating or coatings to a sulphate process type pigmentary rutile titanium dioxide and after applying said coating or coatings and heating a further coating of aluminium oxide is applied to the pigment. The examples, describe coating rutile titanium dioxide, in aqueous suspension, with stannic oxide alone, or together with aluminium oxide, or with a combination of aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide and subsequently heating to 750 DEG C. for one hour and a further sample of rutile titanium dioxide pigment coated with alumina, silica and stannic oxide and heating to 625 DEG C. for one hour; the above are compared with a pigment not according to the invention which is only coated with alumina titanium dioxide and silica as to discoloration on exposure to light when incorporated together with a melamine formaldehyde resin in a paper laminate. Specification 1,007,449 is referred to.ALSO:Pigmentary rutile titanium dioxide pigments coated with stannic oxide and optionally alumina and/or silica may be used for producing a pigmented thermo-setting resin for example a urea formaldehyde or melamine formaldehyde or phenol formaldehyde resin by admixture thereto, and curing the resin. The pigment may be incorporated into a supporting material for example paper which may then be impregnated with the resin and finally the resin may be cured. The pigment may be incorporated into a paper at the final beating stage in aqueous suspension and one or more sheets of the resulting paper containing the pigment are then impregnated with a thermo-setting resin as above and the sheets of paper thus per used are subjected to high temperature and high pressure conditions to cure the resin. Specification 1,007,449 is referred to.
