1,007,432. Diplex radio signalling; tunnel diode frequency multipliers. PLESSEY CO. Ltd. Jan. 10, 1962 [Oct. 13, 1960], No. 35177/ 60. Headings H3T and H4L. In a system for transmitting the sum and difference of two stereophonic or like signals either by wire or as modulation on a carrier wave, the audio-frequency sum signal is combined with a sub-carrier amplitude modulated with the difference signal, the percentage modulation being kept below 50% and the amplitude of the modulation being such as to retain the relative amplitudes of the sum and difference signals. The resultant signal consists of a sub-carrier in which the positive and negative half-cycles are modulated independently, one carrying the left-hand signals and the other the right-hand in a stereophonic system. At the receiver the two signals may be recovered separately by oppositely poled diodes. The sub-carrier may be suppressed and a sub-harmonic pilot frequency transmitted whereby the sub-carrier may be reconstituted at the receiver. In one such arrangement, Fig. 7, the 19 kc./s. pilot signal is supplied via filter 11, 12 to a tunnel diode 16 biased to operate as a non-linear amplifier, the output being taken via a filter 14, 15 tuned to 38 kc./s. The application of the system to stereoscopic or two-colour television is suggested.
