Abstract

S-octahydroanthracene is obtained by hydrogenation of "40%" anthracene (containing 40-50% anthracene and obtained by distillation of tar) at 100-250 atmospheres and 300-450 DEG C. in the presence of sulphurresistant catalyst and separating s-octahydroanthracene from the product, e.g. by distillation in a packed column of 80 theoretical plates recovering the fraction boiling at 160-163 DEG C. at 12 mm. Hg. The catalyst may be an oxide and/or sulphide of cobalt, nickel, tungsten or molybdenum.
