Abstract
1,007,226. Valves. ROCKWELL MANUFACTURING CO. June 11, 1963, No. 23189/ 63. Heading F2V. A valve controlling flow from an inlet 11, Fig. 1, to an outlet 12 has a fully open, a closed, and an intermediate position. A main valve element 16 is loaded by a spring 17 towards a seat 14. The chamber 13, at the back of the valve element, is connected by a passageway 25, throttle 24 and an axial bore in a spindle 18, carried by the valve element, to the upstream side and by passageway 28, 29 to the downstream side. Flow through these passageways is controlled by a manually actuated pilot valve 27 which comprises a lever actuated spindle 32 connected to a bush 34 fixed to a sleeve 35. Flow through the passageway 25 is controlled by a valve sleeve 30, loaded by a spring 37 against a shoulder 36. Flow through the passageway 28, 29 is controlled by a valve member 31 having a stepped spindle 39 and springs 41, 43 located between the valve element and a washer 40 and between a washer 42 and a flange 38 of the sleeve 35. A spring 44 acts on the bush 34 and the springs urge the control valve to the position shown. When the spindle 32 is moved upwards, the valve sleeve 30 first closes the passageway 25 after which compression of the spring 43 opens the valve 31 with a snap action allowing the release of fluid from the chamber 13 and the inlet pressure moves the main valve element to the fully open position. When the spindle 32 is released, the control valve moves to the position shown and the main valve closes at a speed determined by the setting of the throttle 24. However, as shown in Fig. 7, the spindle 18 is formed with two recesses 49, 50. The recess 49 is engaged by a screw 51 to prevent rotation of the spindle whereas if the spindle 32 is depressed after the main valve is opened so that the spindle 32 engages the top of the spindle 39, the valve sleeve 30 engages the recess 50 and thus holds the main valve in a partially open or intermediate position. Should the spindle 32 be depressed when the main valve is closed, the spring 37 allows the sleeve 35 to move downwards relatively to the valve sleeve 30. The intermediate position may be adjusted by adjusting the spindle 18 relative to the main valve element 16.
