Abstract

1,006,738. Preventing overspeeding of lift cages; hoists. TORNBORG & LUNDBERG A.B. Jan. 13, 1964 [Jan. 15, 1963], No. 1442/64. Headings B8H and B8L. A lift cage 3 is movable up and down a mast 1 by hoisting gear 9 and ropes 8, 10 which are secured to and wound in opposite directions on a rope drum 11 rotatably mounted on the cage 3, the rope 8 passing over pulleys 6, 7 on a crosshead 5 to the hoisting gear 9 and the rope 10 being secured to the crosshead 5. A device for preventing overspeeding of the cage is mounted on the cage and adapted to brake the drum 11 when the cage reaches a predetermined speed due to breakage of one of the ropes 8, 10. As shown in Fig. 3, a brake drum 24 is secured to the drum 11 and is acted on by a brake band 23 connected to arms 21, 22 on an arm 19 which is pivoted on a shaft 18. When the speed of rotation of the drums 11, 24 reaches a predetermined value, pawls 25, 26 which are pivotally mounted within the drum 24 rotate against the action of compression springs 29 and engage teeth 15 on a wheel 16, which is freely rotatable on the shaft 12 supporting the drums 11, 24, thereby rotating the wheel 16 together with a cam 17 secured thereto. Rotation of the cam 17, which is engaged by a roller 20 on the arm 19, rotates the arm 19 on the shaft 18 and thereby applies the brake. In a modification, Fig. 5, the cam 17 is replaced by pins 41, 42 which are secured to the toothed wheel 16 and which, on rotation of the wheel 16, engage an arcuate head 40 secured to link 35 of toggle linkage 34, 35, extending between pivoted arms 32, 33 which are provided with brake shoes 30. The arms 32, 33 are moved towards each other by a spring 38 to engage the brake shoes 30 with the brake drum when the wheel 16 is rotated and breaks the toggle linkage 34, 35.
