Abstract

A transducer for converting electrical signals into sound waves or vice versa comprises a rigid ring, a diaphragm secured around its periphery to the ring and an elongate piezoelectric element in the form of a strip secured to the centre of the diaphragm, the longitudinal axis of the strip extending radially or diametrally with one or both ends of the strip secured to the ring, the strip having electrodes on two opposite faces normal to the general direction of displacement of the diaphragm. The strip element may be rigidly secured to the ring to form a cantilever system. Two or more strips may extend from different points on the ring inwardly to the centre of the diaphragm. An earpiece assembly for a telephone headset comprises a metal diaphragm 10 (Figs. 2, 3) which has a conical centre portion 11 and is adhered between a rigid plastics ring 12 and a rigid plastics masking disc 13. A strip piezoelectric element 14 of lead zirconate-lead titanate is adhered at its centre to the centre of the diaphragm 10. The ends of element 14 fit into silicone mounting rings 15 in recesses 16, the rings 15 being adhered to ring 12 and to disc 13. Silver electrodes on element 14 are connected by wires 17, 18 to tags 19, 20 on a terminal disc 21. The masking disc 13 is provided with apertures 23 for transmitting air vibrations and is covered with rayon mesh 22. The construction may be used for loudspeakers, hearing aids, or microphones. In a " noise cancelling " microphone disc 21 is apertured or omitted (tags 19, 20 being carried on ring 12). In a modified construction a short strip 30 (Fig. 5) of lead zirconate-lead titanate is joined at one end to a polymethyl methacrylate extension 31 to form a combined element which extends between moumting ring 12.
