Abstract

Polyethylene is made by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a catalyst formed in situ and consisting of vanadium oxytrichloride or vanadium tetrachloride, and an aluminium trialkyl or aluminium alkyl chloride, and a purified aliphatic or hydroaromatic solvent. In the catalyst the molar ratio of the aluminium compound to the vanadium compound is between 3: 1 and 20: 1. The catalyst is preferably formed by adding the aluminium compound to the purified solvent in an ethylene atmosphere, and then adding the vanadium compound. The polymerization temperature is between 20 and 80 DEG C. Exemplified solvents are methyl cyclohexane, and a petroleum fraction of boiling range 80-120 DEG C. The preferred aluminium compound is ethyl aluminium sesquichloride.
