Abstract

1,006,500. Universal joints. FALK CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1963 [Jan. 3, 1963], No. 43808/63. Heading F2U. In a flexible joint having axially-slotted hubs 12 coupled by a sinuous torque-transmitting spring grid 20, the spring grid has a cross-section which increases in stepped widths in a radially outward direction and is disposed in axial-slots 19 which have correspondingly stepped side walls. The stepped side-walls of the slots are formed on axially aligned teeth 18, the circumferential depth of each step being limited to a line traced by a parabolic curve which has its vortex at the radially outer surface of the tooth and passes through the tooth root width as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the parabola representing the correct tooth width at any point for constant stress along the tooth height, a formula being given for the stepped widths of the slots in terms of the number and dimensions of the hub teeth. The axial teeth 18 are inwardly flared at each end to decrease the unsupported span of the spring legs 21 as torque load increases. Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate differing numbers of steps on the hub teeth etc., and in Fig. 6 (not shown) the corners of the steps are rounded to facilitate assembly. The joint is enclosed by a housing which seats on surfaces 23 of the hub teeth 18 and comprises complementary flanged covers 24, flanges 25 of which carry rubber rings 26 forming seals on the hubs, the covers being bolted together face to face on an intermediate rubber sealing disc 28 for the retention of lubricant. Specification 942,229 is referred to.
