Abstract

1,006,491. Carpets. W. R. GRACE & CO. Feb. 7, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 5055/63. Heading A4S. [Also in Division B5] A carpet comprises a pile fabric 1 bonded to a backing element 7 by a layer of synthetic thermoplastic resin binder 5. The resin may be applied to the pile fabric and/or backing element as an aqueous dispersion, a molten plastic or a preformed film using a gauge knife, doctor blade or roll or by calendering. Suitable resins are polymers and copolymers of vinyl acetate e.g. with vinyl chloride plasticised with a non-volatile plasticiser such as dibutyl phthalate. The pile fabric may be cut or uncut and may be vegetable, animal or synthetic fibres e.g. nylon. The backing element may be non-woven e.g. felt or woven e.g. jute, sheeting, drill, burlap or crinoline.
