Abstract
100,641. Casanovas, B. F. de, and Rubio y Roger, R. June 9, 1915, [Convention date]. Projectiles fuses.-Consists mainly (1) in improving the transmission of ignition from short timefuses to the explosive charges of shrapnel projectiles. especially of the kind described in Specification No. 8443/15, by covering the end of the timefuse with detonating composition, and (2) in means for making the fuses accurately to length and shape. In the fuse shown in Fig. 3, the time-fuse composition b is ignited by a percussion cap s subjected to the pressure of the gun gases, and transmits the ignition to the explosive charge p of the projectile. At one end of the fuse, and covering the vent holes n, there is a ring o of black powder or of black powder mixed with a small amount of phosphorus, this end of the fuse being covered by a layer of detonating-composition. At the other end of the fuse, there is a charge g of detonating-composition, such as fulminate of mercury, lead nitride, or nitrogen sulphide, covered by a disk of gun-cotton h. This end d of the fuse is arch-shaped, as shown, to strengthen it against premature disintegration while burning, and the fuse body a is constricted intermediate its ends to enhance the effect of the detonation of the detonating charge g in the direction of the projectile charge p. In a modification, Fig. 4, the fuse composition b extends beyond the constriction of the fuse body and is flat-ended, and the detonating- charger g is a compressed plug pressed down against the end of the fuse composition b. To ensure accuracy of dimensions, an excess of fuse composition is first pressed into the fuse body a, which is then placed in a jig j, Fig. 5, over a seat k. where the fuse composition is cut to length and shape by a cutter t. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 15941/14.
