Abstract

1,006,053. Cooling electrical equipment. DECCA Ltd. Aug. 11, 1964 [May 15, 1963], No. 19376/63. Heading F4U. [Also in Division H1] In an arrangement for cooling electrical components mounted on a plurality of boards such as printed circuit board 47, Fig. 2, the boards are supported in parallel planes by spacing elements 31 disposed in pairs between metal plates 30 having internal duets 32, the spacing elements 31 having open-ended passages which register with ports in the plates 30 to provide a path for cooling fluid. Fig. 4 shows how coolant is supplied in parallel paths to all plates 30; the coolant flows through a hole 37 in the plate, via a passage 51 in the next lower spacing element 31 into a port 33 in the under-face of the plate, and so through the ducting 32; leaving the ducting by port 34, it is removed via passage 53 and hole 38. The printed circuit boards 47 are secured to frames 42 which slide in slots formed between two ridges on the inner sides of the spacing elements, and may be provided with screw-mechanism whereby rotation of a knob 46 causes the insertion or withdrawal of the frame into or out of the assembly. Spacing elements 31 may carry cladding, and each assembly is accommodated in an insulating housing 10. Coolant is driven by a pump 16, Fig. 1, through a heat exchanger 20, which is maintained at a constant output temperature by a refrigerator unit 22 operated through a thermostat 25 incorporating a temperaturesenser 24, and a filter 21 to an adjustable flow valve 12 associated with each housing 11, and thence in parallel through the enclosed assemblies and back to the heat exchanger 20.
