Abstract

1,005,910. Taking up slack in flexible connectors. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. April 7, 1964, No. 14269/64. Heading B8B. A retractable dependent column carrying connectors 28<SP>1</SP>, 30<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, for electric cables, gas pipes and other services for use in operating theatres, laboratories, workshops etc. comprises an upper fixed housing 18 having laterally spaced vertically extending rack bars 20 and a lower housing 16 vertically adjustable on the rack bars 20 and carrying gear trains 66a-66d operatively interconnecting the racks 20 so that the housing is restrained against tilting. A pair of gear trains 66a-66d interconnected by a shaft 70, Fig. 4, are arranged on opposite sides of a frame 32 forming the upper part of the housing. A counterbalancing spring drum 80 is mounted on the shaft 70 and carries a spring 81 attached at its upper end to a bracket 84 on the fixed housing 18. Flexible cables, pipes 46, 48 are arranged within the housing assembly 16, 18 between the supply connections 28, 30 and the connectors 28<SP>1</SP>, 30<SP>1</SP> and are looped over attachment brackets 52 on the frame 32 to form excess length extension loops 46<SP>1</SP>, 48<SP>1</SP> to accommodate the vertical movement. The lower housing 16 may be locked in any vertical position by engagement of a locking pin 90 (not shown) into one of the rack bars 20. A handle 100 extending below the column operates the pin 90. Hooks H on the lower end of the column may be used for supporting intravenous bottles &c.
