Abstract

1,005,633. Vehicle independent suspensions. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 19, 1964, No. 25412/64. Heading B7D. In a strut-type suspension comprising a telescopic strut 3, lateral control arms 15 and anti-roll bar 21, the lateral load on the strut, due to the intersection of the axes of the strut and control arm 15 being other than on the vertical through the point of contact of the wheel with the ground, is partly offset at least by a lateral spring force. This lateral force reduces the loading of the strut bearings 24 and is provided either by inclining the axis of the suspension coil spring 23 to the body of the strut (Fig. 1) or by securing the upper bearing 29 of the strut in an asymmetrical rubber mounting (Fig. 3) mounted with its axis inclined to the axis of the bearing.
