Abstract

A mixture of a thermoplastic material, e.g, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyisobutylene. polytetrafluoroethylene or polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene, and conductive particles is used as an electrical resistor. The conductive particles may be carbon black, graphite, Fe, Cu, Cr, Ti, W, Pt metals, B, Si, Ag, Au or Al. The conductive particles may be of size 0.003-1.0m whilst they may compose 25-75% of the composition whilst the remainder of the composition is a plastics material having an expansion efficient of at least 3 times greater than the conductive particles The resistor may be constructed by compressing the conductive particles together with a catalyst and feeding the monomer to the particles, thus allowing polymerization in situ around the particles. Another embodiment utilizes a partially polymerized olefin which is mixed with carbon black, compressed and further polymerized. To control the quality of the product, the resistance may be continuously monitored. In specific embodiments carbon black is dispersed in polyethylene.
