Abstract
1,004,865. Laying road marking lines. G. EIGENMANN. Sept. 11, 1961 [Sept. 10, 1960 (4)], No. 32504/61. Heading E1G. Apparatus for laying plastic strip road marking lines comprises a vehicle having road surface cleaning means, means for applying adhesive to a stock of plastic strip or to the road surface and means for pressing the strip on to the road surface. The road surface 10 is cleaned by brushing means 20 which may include two power-driven brushes followed by fluid from jets 21 dried by squeegee rollers and/or hot gas jets 22. Adhesive is sprayed on to the road by jets 23. Plastic strip from a roll 25 passes through a heating section 27, where heat from drums 30 is transferred to the strip by endless bands 29, to adhesive applying apparatus 28, thence through a further heating section 32 to increase the viscosity of the adhesive to contact the road at 24 where the strip is held in contact by an endless band pressure device 35. If an intermittent line is to be laid the strip passes through a moving roller system 36 to compensate for intermittent motion produced by a claw and shear apparatus 34 feeding the strip in spaced sections. The pressure band 35 may pass means for cleaning the outer surface by washing and brushing and means for applying a release agent. In a simplified form the pressure may be produced by a flexible surfaced roller or by a pressure roller actuated in a rearward direction by a fluid pressure jack. In a simplified embodiment, Fig. 18, strip from a reel 40 is fed by a friction roller 120 and slack compensating roller 121 to rotating shears 122, 123, which sever determined lengths, thence by adhesive applying roller 125 and driving roller 127 to a resilient surfaced applying roller 124. In another embodiment for applying short lengths, Fig. 17, strip from a reel 280 constantly rotated by a friction roller 281 passes a take-up roller system 285 to nip rollers 283 driven through a Geneva mechanism 284. The strip passes to a cutting mechanism 287, the individual pieces being fed to an applying wheel 291 by a cam-operated roller 289, the wheel 291 being divided into sectors 292 alternately in connection with a suction pipe 294 and pressure pipe 295 to hold the pieces 288 to the wheel and then press them on the road surface. Separate strips or shaped pieces may be applied by apparatus, as shown in Fig. 9, in which the pieces 71 are applied from a container 72 moved vertically by differential action of two rail sections 75, 77, the container moving backwards as the vehicle moves forwards.
