Abstract

1,004,598. Microwave phase-shifters. BENDIX CORPORATION. March 26, 1963 [April 2, 1962], No. 11816/63. Heading H1W. A microwave phase-shifter comprises a short length 10 of dielectric waveguide and a movable dielectric member 18 for varying its electrical length. The member 18 may be made of foamed polystyrene and may have a periphery bounded by an Archimedean spiral so that, upon rotation about axis 20 a saw-tooth pattern of phase variation is produced. As the element 18 is moved away from the waveguide in the direction of the axis 20, the resolution of the phase-shifter increases but the maximum available phase-shift decreases. In a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), the dielectric element is in the form of a rectangular plate arranged parallel to the dielectric waveguide and movable in a direction at right angles to the waveguide axis.
