Abstract

1,004,362. Rollers. METAL-TECH. Inc. April 24, 1963, No. 16070/63. Heading F2U. A paper-making roller comprises a hollow cylindrical openwork honeycomb formed by thin, wide, flexible longitudinal strips 31-34 of stainless steel or P.T.F.E., angularly bent into alternate flat-faced corrugations and secured together, by epoxy resin, to form radial hexagonal fluid conduits 51, some of the pairs of strips being of greater length than the intermediate pairs and having their ends secured by epoxy resin in radial slots 27 formed in a pair of end heads 21, 22, which are also shouldered at 28 to provide additional support for the intermediate pairs of strips. Additionally, axially spaced support rings 70-73 are arranged within the cylinder, the rings and strips being notched to interlock. A similar honeycomb structure may additionally be used to form an edge seal around an arcuate frame section of a cooperating suction box (Fig. 3, not shown), arranged within the roll, the honeycomb structure being arranged as a lining around the edge of the arcuate frame to which it is secured by epoxy resin forming cells which create a pressure drop across the interface and thus seal the edge. The clearance and pressure drop may be changed by threaded adjusters, at each end of the suction box, which vary the radial position of the frame relative to the inner surface of the roll. This arrangement may also serve as a dryer, e.g. when the suction is replaced by compression to blow the air outwardly through the roll.
