Abstract

Phenolic phosphates and/or phenolic phosphites which have been exposed to air or oxygen are used as catalysts in the bulk polymerization of vinyl carbazole. The phosphate and/or phosphite are preferably present in amounts of from 5 to 70% by weight of the monomer. Examples of suitable catalysts are: tritolyl phosphate, triethyl phenyl phosphate, trixylenyl phosphate, trinonyl phenyl phosphite and triphenyl phosphite. The reaction is accelerated by heat, aromatic thiols, phosphoric acid and phenols. The reaction is inhibited by amines or thioketones.
