Abstract
1,003,655. Inserting supplements in newspapers, &C. W. KLUGE. May 6, 1964 [May 6. 1963], No. 18901/64. Headings B6B and B6H, Apparatus for the insertion of supplements into newspapers, periodicals, &c., immediately after the printing operations comprises a continuously rotating wheel having two side rims 17 between which are pivotally supported " pockets " 1-16 which are always maintained in the same upright position to receive the newspapers and supplements, each pocket having a base part which can be swung aside, and sides which can be swung outwardly and displaced upwardly relatively to the base part. The wheel rims 17 are joined by spokes 18 to a common hub 19 rotatable about a fixed shaft 20, and the pockets are supported in the rims by pivot pins which carry sprockets on the outer face of each rim. The sprockets on each side of the wheel are engaged by a common drive chain: in addition, certain sprockets associated with some pockets may have cross chains to reduce the load on the common chain. Each pocket marked 1 and 16 is subdivided centrally to form two pockets side-by-side, and comprises end plates supporting cross-spindles 29, 30, Fig. 4, which carry a number of arms 31. The spindle 30 also pivotable supports pairs of plates 46, 47 which form the bottom of the two pockets. Further spindles 34, 35 carrying cams 36 are pivoted in plates adjacent the pocket end plates. All the spindles of each pocket can be rocked by an individual system of pneumatic cylinder and rod arrangements mounted on or adjacent the end plates of each pocket, and controlled by a valve secured to each pocket, whereby the arms 31 can be moved towards and away from each other, the arms 36 can do likewise and also be moved upwardly and downwardly, and the plates 46, 47 can be swung aside. Pivotally mounted spreader arms 44, 45 (not shown) are arranged within each pocket; they are pneumatically operated, and may comprise hollow tubes from which airblasts issue. The newspapers 51, two side-byside, are conveyed by belts 52 having projections 53 thereon; the supplements 55 are similarly fed on the opposite side of the wheel; the combined newspapers and supplements are carried away by a conveyer 56; and a stacking device 57 receives newspapers which lack supplements, or supplements alone, and release of these items to the device 57 is controlled by a system of optical devices of known construction. Operation; opening newspapers.-When two newspapers 51 are deposited in a pocket at 1, Fig. 1, the arms 31, 36 are both swung inwards to grip the newspapers as at position 2. In pocket position 3, the arms 31 are apart, the spindles 34, 35 have been lowered so that the arms 36 bow each newspaper to tubular shape, and the spreader arms 44 have entered the interior from each end. In position 4, the arms 36 have swung away, and the arms 44 have spread out and smoothed each newspaper. This condition is maintained in positions 5 and 6. In pocket position 7, also shown in Fig. 4, the spindles 34, 35 have moved up, and two supplements 55 have been dropped into the newspapers by the conveyer 54. The operations of the arms 31, 36 described for pocket positions 1-4 are now repeated until pocket position 12 is reached, and here the newspapers and supplements are stapled together. The base plates 46, 47 may be swung aside at position 14 to allow a defective newspaper, or a supplement alone, to be stacked at 57; or they are swung aside at position 15 to deposit combined newspapers and supplements to fall on to conveyer 56. In a modification (Figs. 5-7, not shown), the pocket arms &c. are actuated mechanical by cam, lever, and rack-and-pinion means. Stapling apparatus.-Two air cylinders 58 secured to the fixed shaft 20 have their piston rods connected to the blade 60 of a stapling device, which includes a head 61 actuated by an air cylinder 62. The blade and head are moved towards each other when the pocket is in the position 12. The stapling operation is performed during continuous rotation of the wheel 17-19
